Alyssa was the first nurse to stop and take the time to really learn what I was going through and went through different options with me.
Alyssa had become my nurse after one of the hardest nights and what became my worst day here, in the previous night I had some hallucinations and pulled my IV and the nurse I had taken 6 hours to get me hooked back up. I felt that nurse did not care about the pain I was going through. When Alyssa first came in and introduced herself she was bubbly and showed care asked what was going on I had let her know the issues the night before where my pain level was. Throughout the day she not only advocated for me to move to a liquid diet but also when she asked questions about what I was going through and not just what the nurse said from the night before I let her know that the bed was killing my back and that a lot of new pain was coming back from old injuries. She asked about previous medications and because I came in for pancreatitis I didn't realize that on the occasion my back would hurt. I would take a muscle relaxer at home that I need to mention that so when I did she immediately contacted the doctor, got the order for a muscle relaxer, and my blood pressure went from being in the 180-190s down to the 130s-140s. It was a huge turning point for treatment and in the past when the nurses would ask about the pain I would let them know my back hurt and they would tell me it was from constipation and that we would keep giving me stool softener. I was pretty drugged up at first and Alyssa was the first nurse to stop and take the time to really learn what I was going through and went through different options with me. I was told that day that I would still be in the hospital for another 4 days after already being here 4 days. My morale was down and things looked really bleak but Alyssa kept my spirits up all day and I don't know where I would be without her on that day. She also would ask if my wife who had been with me the whole time if she needed anything, especially water. She is 6 months pregnant and wasn't taking great care of herself and if felt good to know that a nurse would go that extra step and not only care about my care but also my support person.
