This nurse is the definition of positive energy. Regardless of the situation, good and bad, she always takes it on with an infectious laugh and smile that puts everyone at ease. Alyssa shows outstanding leadership skills in the role of a charge, and you know when she is working that you will always have a resource, a friend, a confidant, and someone who will diffuse a situation that makes all parties feel that their opinions and feelings are heard. Alyssa not only provides this for fellow coworkers but also to the family members of patients going through some of the most challenging times of their lives. During a difficult decision for a mother and father to watch their child in the last moments of their life, this nurse explained the process of comfort care and what it all encompassed in such a kind and compassionate way that it reached the family. She acknowledged and validated their feelings and seemingly made them feel safe to express their emotions. She then followed up with a hug that the mother needed to express her grief, frustration, anger, and acceptance. She then continued to follow up with the process to ensure the family received what they needed, whether personally or by delegating the task to another nurse. This nurse deserves the DAISY Award.
