I know a good nurse when I see one. Alyssa is truly outstanding. Her clinical judgment, professionalism, and intuitive understanding of pediatric care were evident in every interaction.
I am writing to formally recognize Alyssa for the exceptional, compassionate, and patient-centered care she provided to my daughter during her recent hospitalization.

My daughter was admitted for a scheduled tethered cord release. Prior to surgery, she was able to void without difficulty. However, following surgery, she was unable to void at all and began retaining urine. Over the next two days, she underwent more than eight catheterizations. These repeated interventions were extremely traumatic for her, and she developed significant fear toward anyone entering the room. As a parent, it was incredibly difficult to watch her become so distressed during an already challenging time.

On the third day of her admission, we were assigned Alyssa. From the moment she entered the room, her demeanor, insight, and approach were immediately different. Alyssa recognized not only her medical needs but also the emotional trauma she was experiencing. Very early in her shift, she initiated a Child Life consult after observing my daughter's intense fear and distress. This consult became a critical turning point in her care. Child Life was able to provide support, evaluation, and coping strategies that significantly improved her experience. That support would not have been in place without Alyssa's advocacy. Her awareness and responsiveness reflect a deep understanding of the needs of pediatric patients.

As an experienced emergency department nurse myself, my expectations for my daughter's care are exceptionally high. I know a good nurse when I see one. Alyssa is truly outstanding. Her clinical judgment, professionalism, and intuitive understanding of pediatric care were evident in every interaction.

Alyssa took the time to build rapport and trust with my daughter in ways no one else had been able to. She got down on her level, allowed her to practice vital signs and bladder scans on her dolls, and even let Harper take her own vitals. By restoring her sense of safety and control, Alyssa not only improved her comfort but also made it easier for other nurses and staff to care for her. Because Harper was far less frightened, subsequent assessments and interactions were smoother, safer, and significantly less distressing for everyone involved.

Another example of Alyssa's exceptional care occurred early one morning at approximately 5:30 a.m., when two neurosurgeons arrived unexpectedly to inform us that my daughter required a STAT MRI. It was a stressful moment to be awakened by such urgent news as she would again require general anesthesia. During this high-pressure situation, Alyssa remained calm, professional, and reassuring. She learned that she would need to be catheterized prior to the MRI, and understanding the trauma she had already endured, she immediately advocated for the catheterization to be performed while my daughter was sedated for the scan. That single suggestion spared her from another distressing experience. Alyssa worked quickly and efficiently to prepare everything, and she personally transported she and I with the resident to the pre-op area to ensure a smooth transition of care.

Throughout my daughter's admission, even when she was not assigned to her, Alyssa returned to check on her. She consistently demonstrated kindness, empathy, and a genuine connection that left a meaningful impact on our family. Her dedication went far beyond her required duties.

Alyssa exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding pediatric nurse: clinical excellence, emotional intelligence, compassion, calm under pressure, and unwavering advocacy for her patient embody everything the DAISY Award stands for. She didn't just care for Harper medically; she cared for her with patience, compassion, and empathy.

For these reasons, I highly and sincerely recommend Alyssa to receive the DAISY Award. Her compassion and professionalism made an immeasurable difference in my daugher's care, and we will always be grateful.
