We had a patient in the ICU for two weeks who had a difficult and emotionally difficult time during his stay. Alyxis was his nurse for much of his stay and provided a high level of professional nursing care, but also brought an amazing level of personal care to the emotional needs of the patient, his wife, and their family. So much so, that on the day the family chose for a compassionate extubation they asked Alyxis to remain with them even though her shift ended early that morning. When I arrived for the extubation, Alyxis was present and supportive for the patient's wife and family through the entire procedure.
It was inspirational to witness the dedication and compassion that Alyxis brought to her unit today. The patient was critically ill and did pass shortly after the extubation and Alyxis stood by the family to the end. She is an excellent example of the values for UnityPoint Health and it is a privilege to work with bedside her.
