I've watched her laugh, cry, and pray with patients and see the impact she makes.
Amanda Avery gives consistent, exceptional care to each patient she receives in recovery, as all of our PACU nurses do. But one particular recent event followed a "Call Back Case" for an emergent open leg fracture. The patient explained to me as we transported her from the ER to the main OR, as well as to Amanda Avery again later, that she had not bathed in a few days, and that it was very difficult to perform this task on a daily basis as she had no family or caregivers to assist her. This was at 2:00 am. Following surgery, while in PACU, Amanda spoke with the patient with such compassion and offered encouragement as the patient voiced concerns about how she would care for herself once home. Amanda bathed the patient before transporting her to her room. Amanda made every attempt to make the patient comfortable...warm blankets, repositioning, pain medication, encouraging words, and holding her hand. But feeling clean was a sure measure to help her patient sleep better. Following the transfer to the patient's room, I commented on how she went the extra mile to provide care and comfort by bathing the patient in recovery. (Most of us just assume this would be completed by floor staff...but what if it was not?) Amanda replied, "We don't know what a lot of these people's lives are like, or how lonely they are, and there are so many sad situations. I might be the only person that says a kind word or offers a simple act of kindness that will make all the difference in someone's life. It is my goal every day to not just be the best nurse I can be to my patient, but to truly show them compassion and love, and to make them feel valued, not matter who they are, where they're from, or their beliefs. I'm not perfect, but I love my patients, and I'm going to provide the best care I can and, hopefully, it will make a difference in their life." Amanda and I came back in to work our regular assigned shift a few hours later at 6:00 am. I commend Amanda for her servant's heart. I've watched her laugh, cry, and pray with patients and see the impact she makes. Working with Amanda Avery has made a difference in my own life.
