I wholeheartedly nominate Amanda Cabrera, RN, for the DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care she provided during my recovery from a total thyroidectomy due to papillary thyroid carcinoma. Amanda's commitment to my well-being was unwavering, and her actions demonstrated the epitome of compassionate nursing. Amanda conducted a thorough post-op assessment and maintained a vigilant watch over me throughout the day. Despite the challenges of recovering from surgery, Amanda made me feel like her sole focus. Each time I pressed the call button, she and her team responded promptly, providing reassurance during moments of significant discomfort. As a young woman navigating the recovery process and cancer surgery, I found myself immobile and unable to perform basic tasks. Amanda's kindness and compassion were not only evident but served as a source of comfort. Her calm and patient demeanor extended beyond attending to my needs; she ensured my husband was well-informed and supported throughout. Amanda's dedication was comprehensive, overseeing my meals, explaining medications, and facilitating bathroom visits with utmost safety. During the night shift, when I experienced numbness and tingling, I was given calcium, but never resolved in the morning. Amanda made sure to communicate with the provider that symptoms were not resolving and was presented with Calcitriol, which later my face became flushed - I never had an allergic reaction to anything. When Amanda was faced with an unprecedented situation (allergy to Calcitriol), promptly informed the healthcare provider, and the issue was successfully resolved with the administration of Benadryl. The subsequent peaceful nap was a testament to her expertise and care. Throughout this experience, I never doubted Amanda's commitment to my well-being. Her innate compassion, a quality truly inherent, makes her not only deserving of recognition but exemplifies the qualities celebrated by the DAISY Award. Should the need for surgery arise in the future, my unequivocal choice would be to have Amanda Cabrera, RN, as my nurse. I experienced a seamless transition home from the excellent nursing care she provided at MD Anderson. Amanda's dedication and proficiency embody the spirit of the DAISY Award and I am profoundly grateful for the outstanding care she delivered to me, personally and professionally.
