For Amanda the focus was the patient, not the day of the week, putting the patient at the center of their care.
The first thing many of our patients ask when they come to our unit is if Amanda is working. They remark that if she is working, they are more comfortable as she understands each aspect of their care and treatment. She takes time for not only the big things; but also, the little things.
Recently, Amanda learned one of our regular patients was to be discharged on the weekend from another hospital. Usually, patients must wait until Monday for outpatient infusions to be set up. Amanda advocated for the patient ensuring they would begin their infusion in their own community on Sunday. For Amanda the focus was the patient, not the day of the week, putting the patient at the center of their care. To accomplish the goal she engaged the provider, the pharmacy, the staff, and the patient. Amanda was determined he would get the care he needed. She went above and beyond to arrange for him to receive his outpatient treatment on the weekend at our facility; therefore, he was able to be discharged from another hospital 110 miles away.
Receiving care in his own community meant the world to the patient. He was able to come back to his home and receive his necessary infusions in his own community. In the end, the patient and his wife took the time to hand write a thank you card for Amanda, knowing how she made the difference in their care and put him first. She is consistently going above and beyond for her patients. She forms relationships with them and none of her patients is a number.
When Amanda floats to the ED she may care for one of her outpatients as an ED patient. They remark how wonderful it is to see her familiar face and hear her voice, it brings them comfort in their time of an acute change. She continually takes the time to do the little things for the patient and brings a personal touch to healthcare enhancing their experience and outcomes.
Amanda is one of the most caring and compassionate nurses I know. Fishermen’s Community Hospital and the community are blessed to have her as a nurse in our hospital. This is why she is a DAISY Nurse; she generously gives the same thoughtful quality care to each of her patients.
