I have had the privilege of co-primarying a NICU patient with Amanda. Although we both work day shift on opposite schedules, this has allowed our patient and his family to experience meaningful continuity of care. While I do not often witness Amanda’s interactions with the infant and family firsthand, her dedication, compassion, and advocacy are evident in every aspect of the care she provides.

Amanda has been caring for this infant since his birth in September and has consistently gone above and beyond to prepare his family for life after discharge. From day one, she has encouraged and empowered these first-time parents to take an active and independent role in their child’s care, even as they navigate the complexities of a medically fragile infant.

When this infant required both a tracheostomy and gastrostomy tube, Amanda took the initiative to create a comprehensive binder for the family. This resource included clear, accessible information about pre- and post-operative expectations, hands-on care instructions, and guidance for transitioning safely to home. Through her teaching and encouragement, she has helped foster confidence, resilience, and independence in these parents. I have seen the impact of her efforts in my own interactions with them; their willingness to step in, even when nervous, speaks volumes about the support and preparation they have received.

Amanda’s excellence extends beyond patient and family care. She is an incredible colleague and a true team player. She created an additional binder for bedside nurses, compiling essential policies and guidelines for trach and G-tube care, and developed a rooming-in/discharge readiness checklist to ensure continuity and completeness of education. These tools have been invaluable in promoting consistency and supporting staff.

When I began primarying this patient on night shift, I always appreciated following Amanda. Her reports were consistently thorough, thoughtful, and set the oncoming nurse up for success.

Amanda exemplifies the qualities of a DAISY Award nurse through her unwavering compassion, initiative, and commitment to both her patients and her team. I am grateful to work alongside her and would co-primary with her again without hesitation.

Thank you, Amanda, for the incredible care you provide every day. You are truly an asset to our unit.
