The patient's change in condition came suddenly and they quickly used their nursing skills, experience, and therapeutic communication to support the patient and get the correct teams involved.
Hannah Emig was the primary RN caring for one of our patients. Amanda was an orientee working with Hannah. One of the patients had some complications after her delivery. The patient was preparing for discharge. A staff member took the patient to the bathroom and then called Hannah because the patient started having vaginal bleeding. Hannah and Amanda acted quickly to get the patient back in bed. Vitals were obtained and the provider was contacted to notify them of the change in the patient's condition. The patient's bleeding began to worsen and they acted quickly and calmly to respond to the needs of the patient. Hannah assessed the amount of blood and immediately called a rapid response to expedite the patient getting help to stop the bleeding. While Hannah talked to the rapid response team and coordinated orders, Amanda remained by the head of the bed with the patient. She ensured she was talking to her and updating her on what the care team was doing. Hannah remained an advocate for her patient during the entire process, communicating with the providers and Amanda remained calm, communicating with the patient.

The rapid response team wanted to move the patient to the ICU. Hannah and Amanda transported the patient to the ICU and they continued to talk to the patient and tried to keep her awake and alert during the transport. They rushed to get the patient to the ICU and OR where further treatment was provided. Sadly, despite our best efforts, the patient was having internal bleeding and did not survive the surgery.

Hannah and Amanda showed courage, compassion, and excellent clinical skills while caring for this patient. The patient's change in condition came suddenly and they quickly used their nursing skills, experience, and therapeutic communication to support the patient and get the correct teams involved. Hannah followed her instinct and advocated for her patient to go to the operating room emergently to find the source of the bleeding. They supported the family that was at the bedside and Amanda kept the patient calm during the entire process. I am so proud of the care that Hannah and Amanda provided to this patient. They demonstrated the highest level of nursing excellence and cared for all aspects of the patient.
