Amanda took these two girls in that day and tried to make them feel as comfortable and loved as possible.
Two young girls, ages 9 and 14, arrived at the Emergency Department via ambulance accompanying their critically ill grandmother (their guardian) - who passed away that day while at UAB.  The girls and their grandmother were en route to the beach to spread their Mother's ashes, who recently passed away.  The grandmother woke up that morning at a hotel suddenly feeling short of breath and got her 14-year-old granddaughter to call 911.  This one day will undoubtedly be these two girls' worst day of their lives, but I know they will forever remember their angel, Amanda Haywood, ANM of the Emergency Department.  Amanda took these two girls in that day and tried to make them feel as comfortable and loved as possible.  Amanda cleared out the consult room and placed recliners and blankets for the girls to get rest.  She made sure a PCT stayed with them at all times so they would not be alone.  She instructed the PCT to take the girls for a walk to Chick-Fil-A so they could have different scenery.  She also paid for their lunches and provided them with donuts (that another former patient's family member dropped off for Amanda due to how much she was there for them in their time of need).  Overall, Amanda cared immensely for these girls while they were alone in the UED and deeply felt the pain of the situation, but she never gave up on making sure the girls felt loved and taken care of on one of the worst days of their lives.
