We met Amanda when my dad was in her unit because the Medical ICU was full. She helped care for him for about a week before we met her. Our first interactions with her were the day our family all came in to meet with hospice. Amanda was so kind, caring, and compassionate as we navigated the emotional chaos of moving forward with Dad's transition to hospice. She shared stories with us of her time caring for him, and it was obvious that she has a heart of service. She spoke about Dad as if he was someone who she knew and cared about, and watching her take care of him helped us come to terms with the 6 days he'd been in ICU without us being able to see him. She spoke to him with such gentle kindness, even though he wasn't able to speak back. She had an abundance of patience with our family and answered all our questions with an obvious understanding of our heartbreak. She did an excellent job dealing with all of us, while at the same time exhibiting a level of professionalism, that we didn't doubt for a minute that Dad had received the best care available anywhere from her.
When it was time to transfer Dad up to hospice care, she escorted us up there, ensuring a warm handoff as he started that process.
Although we didn't get the outcome for Dad that we all so desperately were hoping for, we take comfort in knowing his last days of consciousness were in Amanda's care.
