While in the Emergency Room, I was sent to an area without explanation. Once there, a woman introduced herself as Amanda and explained that she would be my nurse until the morning or until a room upstairs opened up. I was so confused since no one told me why I was moving from one area of the emergency room to another. Amanda spent the time explaining to me how I am now admitted (ordered by the doctor) and that, while the hospital is currently busy, herself and her fellow nurse would care for me until my room in a unit will became available. Despite her running around, Amanda answered every patient's call, & searched for dinners or sandwiches (because most of us didn't have dinner yet). She always had a smile. I saw her put other patients at ease, give the gentlest touches on the shoulder, and even leave some of them laughing and smiling- the complete opposite of what was happening to us all prior. I do not think she sat down that night or had a drink of water herself. I am amazed and so happy to see some nurses able to work with a smile, despite the heavy workload and better, to keep me and others at ease and even laughing at some of our most difficult times.
