January 2016 Honoree
amanda kaufman, RN
I am an oncology patient in the Peds floor due to a type of rare cancer found in kids. I am 25 years old. Every year I go to Coachella music festival. This year 3 days before I was set to go, I had to be emergently admitted to the hospital due to a viral infection. When Amanda Kaufman started her shift, I could tell what a gifted nurse she was as she did her physical assessment and clarified the plan of care for me. As the day went on and I developed a fever, she saw how distressed I was that my dream of going to Coachella was disappearing in front of my eyes. Adding insult to injury, I would be out the $750 that I paid for the tickets. Amanda could see me getting more anxious and agitated which was making me physically worse. Without me knowing she took it upon herself to call Coachella on my behalf to try to get a refund for me. After being placed on hold, she patiently was able to get through and plead my case. We weren't able to get a refund, but her compassion and caring about me as a whole person really touched me and made me feel seen and cared for. Amanda contacted the physicians regarding my fever, the lab regarding test results, and Coachella for my emotional well-being.
Thank you, Amanda, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
