Amanda Mowry, LPN
As attendings who work closely with Amanda on a daily basis, we have been consistently impressed with her dedication to providing outstanding care to veterans. Amanda is someone who always goes above and beyond her duties and maintains a cheerful disposition on even the most hectic days.
Amanda deserves praise for all of her work, but we would like to provide some specific examples which highlight her exemplary care:
We recently noted that when giving meningococcal vaccines, the order set labeled the vaccine one way, the vial was labeled another, and the documentation was labeled a third way. This led to great confusion and posed a risk to our veterans both in terms of potentially missing a needed vaccine as well as receiving an unneeded vaccine due to the confusion. Amanda, on her own, documented all this with HIPAA-compliant screenshots that made the issue clear. This was then presented to the pharmacy, and a workaround that protects our veterans was devised. This example demonstrates how she strives to not just improve the care of the veterans she is tasked with, but to improve the function of the medical center as a whole.
One small example among many is the time after checking in a veteran, she told me that he seemed off, maybe a bit more disheveled than at prior visits. It was not something that I would have picked up on, but given her input, I paid particular attention to how he was doing, and indeed he was suffering from a cognitive decline. We were able to involve his family and get him evaluated further, and he has done well.
In another recent example, she personally walked two patients to the distant EKG lab to be sure they were able to get EKGs when our machines in the clinic were not working.
I saw a severely demented patient who had a difficult hospitalization at CCF where he was restrained and sedated for the better part of 3 weeks. His wife was with him, and she was in tears. But when I entered the room, Amanda was sitting there holding her hand to comfort her. And I was running late, so I know she had been there for a while.
One of my patients needed a pap test, and there was no kit available in the primary care clinic. Rather than reschedule the patient or tell me that we could not do the test, Amanda ran from the primary care clinic to the laboratory service (about 10 minutes away) in order to get the correct kit. She then ran back to primary care to assist me with the procedure. Amanda did all of this in record time and with poise and professionalism. The patient and I were very grateful for her care.
In summary, Amanda is an outstanding LPN who is compassionate, committed to patient care, and dedicated to improving the lives of everyone around her. We are so grateful to work with her.
