I cannot tell you how grateful our family is that Amanda Roberts was my dad's nurse Easter Weekend. It's clear that Amanda has a beautiful purpose from God, and that purpose involves not only the expertise she has in the medical field but the beautiful calling to love and help people. My dad arrived at the ER at St. Vincent's downtown on Friday due to gastrointestinal bleeding as a side effect of the chemo pill he had been taking for cancer.
I recall my dad telling us during his stay that his nurse, Amanda, was his "angel" in the ER. She not only took extraordinary care of him for his obvious medical needs, but she also demonstrated genuine empathy, compassion, and concern for him that weekend. Since the pandemic lockdown in our nation took place, our family was at the mercy of all the medical staff, as we could not be present at the hospital throughout this experience for my dad. He was alone with the exception of the people that he was under the care of while he was hospitalized.
Furthermore, we wanted to recognize Amanda, because she stayed in constant contact with my mother while my dad was under her care. Communication with us that weekend was gold. That is not something that we can expect from every caregiver in the field. She treated my dad like her family member. She even got a precious selfie of the two of them that we will cherish forever.
My dad departed the hospital on Easter Sunday only to have to return Monday through Wednesday of that week and eventually the following Monday not to return home because of complications with the surgery that he had to undergo for his chronic internal bleeding. It's been a tough time for our family, but we will never forget the praises my dad gave of precious Amanda Roberts. She is indeed a hero to us.
My dad was touched by an angel in his last days on earth because of her kindness and intentional special care. She exceeded our expectations! We only wish that everyone was like Amanda; then the world would be a much better place. God bless all the heroes and angels in the ER, but especially our favorite - Amanda Roberts - She is a rare gem and truly gifted in her field!
