During her nightshift assignment, a 31wk premature infant started to decompensate and Amanda used her clinical assessment skills to suggest that the infant may have developed a pneumothorax, a potentially life-threatening condition. The provider team confirmed her suspicion and the situation quickly became an all hands effort to stabilize the infant. Amanda stayed 2 hours past her shift to remain at bedside caring for the infant on Easter Sunday. She assisted with multiple procedures required to stabilize the patient to include: needle thoracentesis, intubation, ventilation, surfactant administration and chest tube placement. She continued to provide compassionate care to the infant using hands on techniques to calm the baby, secure the ET tube, and hold the infant in the proper position for several X-rays. Amanda's clinical acumen, compassionate care, selfless service, and teamwork contributed immensely to the positive outcome of this critically ill child.
