The MICU had an 84-year-old patient who wished to be comfort care and was fully neurologically intact to make her own decisions (this was confirmed by the palliative care team). Her estranged son wanted to keep her a full code which was against the patient's wishes.
The MICU team, including the attending MD, ignored the patient and did not grant her wish of being comfort care. Amanda that very morning shortly after receiving report tracked down the attending MD and helped him understand the importance of honoring the patient's wishes and the code status was changed to comfort care.
The level of compassion that Amanda had for this patient was immeasurable and helped this patient keep her dignity by honoring her wish to be comfort care and allowed her orders to be changed so that her pain could be properly managed in accordance with this patient's desire. Amanda takes seriously the well-being of our patients.
