Amanda came from Bethel Nursing School and started in 5 Ortho for a few years before transitioning to OR nursing. After shy of a year, she joined our practice and has been with us for 2 years. Through this time, and with all of our transitions and staffing changes she has become our primary nurse and for a while our only nurse. Despite being solo for quite some time, due to her extreme organization and constant quest for knowledge, as well as her perpetual learner mentality, she has managed to keep Dr. Knapp and my extremely busy practices running smoothly without losing track of anything. She knows every patient from each of our practices and develops a professional relationship with so many of them. I believe she left the OR to work with us because she was missing the relationships with the patient. She is a true humanitarian and entered health care for the right reasons...to become part of the patient's journey and assist them in any way possible. She is overcome with excitement when a patient has a successful outcome and laments when someone struggles. Her attitude toward the patients is so welcoming and heartfelt by many. I have been told countless times by patients that she is the greatest part of our practice and not to let her go. She goes above and beyond in many ways to ensure an extremely high quality of care. Although her day is packed with necessary duties, including prepping for all of our clinics, calling patients with certain updates, tracking down results from all over the state that we need, delivering documents to preop, helping patients in post-op with discharge needs, running our office procedure room, keeping everything stocked, filling out FMLA, taking home call for patient questions, and many other things I don't even realize, she still is always looking for ways to help more. She steps in and assists our scheduler (who is also currently solo for both practices), has worked the front desk when we lost staff and takes PRN OR call to help the needs of our ministry. Every week we uncover more that she has taken on, and not because she was asked to. Impressively, she has found time to go to the floors and spend 15-20 minutes with our discharges to go over my specific discharge instruction sheet to help with a seamless transition to home. I have attached a card that we received today from a patient who had a successful outcome but had some struggles along the way. The patient's message speaks for itself. “Amanda, Thank you for giving me the best care I could have asked for. Your kindness and compassion are unmatched by any nurse I’ve met. I will miss seeing you. Thank you again” I do not know if an outpatient RN is a candidate for The DAISY Award, or if her PRN OR status qualifies her for it, or any other high-level nursing recognition...but I believe she embodies the qualities of such an honor. Our team is one of a kind, and we could not run such a busy practice without each of these people going above and beyond (Steph Santa manager, Erica Parmalee Scheduler, Kat Ralston supervisor) and of course, Andrea who you all know well. Everyone under her supervision is high quality and thrives.
