Amanda actively listened and talked me through some action items to address my concerns.
My mom was admitted to the ER and then transferred to Med Surg a couple days later after her mental and physical health problems reached a crisis point. After a psych consult and her infections were treated, I received information from an external care provider that the hospital doctor planned to release my mother without further psychiatric treatment. I was furious because she was clearly still manic and her mania was a significant contributing factor to her condition – making her a danger to herself. After hearing the news, I spoke to a nurse and the next day I ended up connecting with Amanda. I was still very upset and explained my perception of the situation to her. Amanda actively listened and talked me through some action items to address my concerns. After the nursing team communicated with the doctor about my concerns, my mother was not released and was given a secondary psych eval. Her psych meds were subsequently adjusted and she was held in the hospital a couple more days for observation. On the day of her release there happened to be an eclipse. My mother talked about wanting to see the eclipse for the entire week she was in the hospital. I let Amanda know and she took the time and compassion to make a way for my mother to see it. My mother’s health crisis was an extremely difficult time for me and my family, but seeing the sun darken in the sky and then have it light up again as the moon passed was a perfect metaphor to what we were striving for with my mother. It was a reminder of hope for the future and a special moment with my mother that I will always cherish. Thank you, Amanda, for giving us that core memory and for your leadership of a fantastic team of nurses that inspire hope.
