Amanda overheard a co-worker talking about her step-dad's ileostomy bag and suggested making an appointment for him to see her. Amanda took it upon herself to call the nursing home to help set up transportation. When he arrived for his appointment he had an ABD pad placed over his stoma from the nursing home and his skin was red and raw. She helped him learn how to appropriately put on the ileostomy bag. She spent over an hour working with him using warm rags to help clean his stomach up. Amanda called the nursing home to set up transportation for a follow up visit. She also called an ostomy place to have free ostomy bags delivered to him. When he arrived for his follow-up visit, she immediately recognized something was wrong, as he was weak and unable to move his arms. Amanda quickly cared for his bag and immediately sent him to the ER and called in report, so they were ready for him when he arrived. During this entire thing, she has always kept in contact with his family and made follow up calls. She made it a point to offer to come down to the ER and sit with the family even though she had plans to go out of town that day for the weekend. I can't say enough good things about her and the patient loved her. As I write this, our step-dad is in ICU on a vent and I feel Amanda was instrumental in giving him an opportunity to fight for his life. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have had a chance.
