Amanda Wood was nominated for suggesting a crucial method of pain relief for a patient suffering from severe intestinal problems and reflux pain.
The patient was in the hospital for the majority of a week and encountered Amanda on several shifts. Each time Amanda visited the patient, she was kind and patient and acted with compassion during a vulnerable time for the woman.
One morning, the patient was in tremendous pain and shortness of breath. Amanda spoke with the physician and suggested trying nitroglycerin when all other options failed to bring relief.
"The doctor agreed with Amanda, and within minutes, my mother experienced almost total relief," the patient's daughter wrote in a nomination letter. "She's now been prescribed nitroglycerin for acute attacks and is able to take the medication at home. Amanda's proactive approach has helped my mother so much, and I'm very thankful."
The patient's daughter was so grateful for Amanda's support and help over several stressful days that she told Amanda's story to her own daughter who is studying to become a nurse to inspire her to become an equally great bedside nurse.
