Amber Berg was nominated for the DAISY award because she helped a patient work through some difficult times while recovering from a health setback. Berg gives credit to all her colleagues, who assisted Berg with this patient. "It was great to see how we worked as a team and how the patient really enjoyed helping with the recovery process," Berg said. The day of the award ceremony (a surprise for the recipient), Amber thought it was odd when someone took over while she admitted a patient and was asked to go to a room nearby. "After they announced the name, I thought there must be another Amber in here," said Berg, as she looked around the room. Amber has worked at Mayo Clinic Health System - Oakridge in Osseo since 2003, where she started as a certified nursing assistant in the nursing home and proceeded to earn her licensed practical nurse certification. As she continued her educational journey, she remembers sitting in a hospital room after her father had a stroke. She was working on a homework assignment, and a registered nurse helped her work through the answer to something she didn't know. Amber said she felt the compassion of that experience and knew she wanted to be a nurse. She is now a registered nurse in the hospital and Transitional Care. "It's important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that," said Lynn Frank, Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President at Mayo Clinic Health System's Northwest Wisconsin Region.
