COVID-19 has been such a challenging time, but also a time when some exceptional caregivers have stepped up to advocate for our COVID-19 patients here at YH. I would like to nominate Amber Brockman for the impact she is making on our COVID-19 patients and their outcomes. Amber early on was very passionate about proning (positioning COVID-19 patients on their stomachs) to help with oxygenation and improve her patient's prognosis. She saw early on that by repositioning and proning, her patients were coming off their high O2 requirements quicker and weren't being transferred to the ICU as much. Amber took time to understand the science and physiology behind proning, developed staff and patient education, and started rallying her team on 5 south to start proning patients on a more consistent schedule. When she realized that wasn't enough to impact all the patients here suffering from COVID-19, she reached out to her manager and CNO about developing a team to assist with prone positioning.
Over the Christmas and the New Year holidays, Amber worked on the units, rounding, educating staff, assisting with proning, and helping to identify the patients that would benefit most from prone positioning. She continues to develop new training materials and collect data that demonstrates how effective the intervention of prone positioning is for patients. She has spent hours communicating with staff and helping patients understand the importance of prone positioning, getting patients who were resistant and refusing prone positioning to agree, resulting in great improvements in a relatively short time frame. Amber is passionate, driven, and committed to helping our sickest COVID-19 patients get better and it is palpable when you meet her and talk to her about her work. As a result, we hope to formalize a prone team that will provide house-wide education about the importance of prone positioning, how to prone, and how to identify those patients who would benefit the most among our med-surg patient population. Her desire to improve care for our COVID-19 patients is amazing and can be seen in every patient she has cared for on 5 south!
