I am writing this on behalf of the care I witnessed. I was the primary RN for this patient, but I had another nurse, Amber, cover me for my lunch break. When I came back from my lunch break, Amber was sitting at my patient's bedside and told me that my patient had started deteriorating quickly. This patient was a DNAR and was just changed to hospice care that day. As a new hospice patient, she did not yet have any PRN medications to keep her comfortable. Additionally, this patient had no family at bedside. As this patient was battling her final moments, Amber stayed by her side. She stroked her hair, held her hand, and frequently reminded the patient to stay calm and focus on her breathing. She also offered comfort measures like heat packs and repositioning. Amber made sure this patient did not die alone. As I called the doctor to get PRN orders, Amber remained at the bedside. She helped me draw up the medications to deliver a quick and seamless delivery for "our" struggling patient. After a couple of medications, the patient became at peace and restful, but Amber didn't stop there. She continued to check in on the patient to ensure she was comfortable and at ease. Watching Amber care so deeply for my patient was beyond incredible, heartwarming, and deserving of this award. She went above and beyond to advocate for this patient, make her comfortable, and help ease her anxieties. I am blessed to work alongside Amber, and her patients are incredibly lucky to have her.
