Without this nurse offering to stay after her shift, the mother would not have gotten the help she needed
A mother came to the Harrisburg ED with postpartum complications from a rare disorder. This condition required the mother to be admitted; however, she was the only current caregiver for her child. The child was around six weeks old, and the father was still in another country. Due to this happening in the evening/overnight, the mother was given the option of being admitted and surrendering her child to CYS care until she was released or leaving against medical advice, as the hospital could not assume care of the baby. Amber DiNatale, who helped care for the mother, offered to stay after shift overnight for four hours until the morning to care for the baby until social services were in house in the morning. She took responsibility for the patient's baby so the mother could get the care she needed. Without this nurse offering to stay after her shift, the mother would not have gotten the help she needed to heal and get better to then care for her baby at home.
