Amber is caring and kind. She addressed Daddy just like he was present with us. She knew he was dying, but there was no pressure to move him to palliative care or hospice. She went about her work quietly, confidently, and expertly. I think I heard her humming. It's obvious she enjoys her work and when she took care of Dad the room was calm, the drama decreased from the chaos of the day shift and we knew that he would be cared for. But what makes her a DAISY Nurse is her holistic care of the patient and family. She knew that it was important for us to be present with Dad. She took care of my dad's wife, got her a chair to sleep in, made sure she had blankets, water, and most importantly, sleep. My dad did not want to be alone and he wanted his wife with him. I know that seems simple. For us, she held our hands and let us talk. She listened and hugged us. Healthcare providers sometimes forget or maybe it's a coping measure on their part, I don't know, but we need healthcare providers to remember that families are in shock, they are confused, they are in panic and the pressure the families feel that every decision being made could be the wrong one and change everyone's lives. Well, Amber seems not to have forgotten that we are looking to the nurse to help us, to be our coordinator of care, our advocate, and she was just that for us. She knows that we are truly biological, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual beings and remembers to plan and address all these needs in a respectful, kind, caring and professional way. What makes her special is how she makes us feel - that there is still hope in the most hopeless of circumstances. In today's world, that's truly a unique gift. You're blessed to have her on your team.
