My husband D was hospitalized at Pioneer Specialty Hospital earlier this year for acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. My husband was aware of his surroundings during his hospital stay and was terrified as were our young daughters and me. We were unsure of what our future would look like and if D was going to recover at all.
During this stressful time for our family, we depended on the nurses, PCTs, and respiratory therapist to keep us informed and calm and to provide direction to us. Because my husband was so scared and out of control of his own breathing, bodily functions, and his whole life really, he could be difficult to handle at times. Pioneer was able to wean him from the vent, remove the trach, and helped him learn to eat and regain his strength in a short period of time.
Once we returned home, D was able to reflect on his time in Pioneer and spoke often about some of the staff that in his words was so kind, compassionate, and patient with him. Our family is extremely grateful for the care that he received and will never forget the entire staff that we came into contact with.
All of that being said, one nurse we feel went above and beyond and it is our wish to recognize her in some way. Amber was never impatient with D or any of us when we asked the same questions over and over. She made us feel safe and comfortable. If my daughters and I could not be there, we knew that we could call Pioneer and breathe a sigh of relief when Amber was caring for D. Again, all of the staff were wonderful, and this is not to take anything away from them at all.
Amber seemed to have a confidence about her that settled our nerves; she was knowledgeable about his medical conditions and delivered care to D with nothing but professionalism and kindness. We still frequently speak of her and remember how Amber helped our family in the most difficult time of our lives and we are thankful beyond words for her.
