As soon as Amber heard this she went to her supervisor and then the nursing director and made sure we had the same access as any other parent would have with their newborn.
We are an adoptive family - and our beautiful baby was born a few days early; requiring a stay in Henry Ford's NICU for elevated respiratory rate and possible infection. Traditionally, being with our son and his birthmother together allows all four of us to bond as a family. But with the NICU stay, along with having our baby hooked up to IVs and all the beeping, only 2 of us were able to be with our son at a time. All of the NICU nurses were so awesome at helping us make the best of this situation and taking exceptional care of our son. However, once our birthmother was discharged and our son was still in the NICU and expected to be transferred to the nursey a short period of time after, we were being told that we would not have 24 hour access to be with our son - we would only be able to be with him during normal visitor hours. We were horrified. Numerous members of the Henry Ford staff worked to help us out - finding hotels (we live in CA) then working to get us a room in the on-campus apartments. But I was a wreck over all of it - I was missing my 2-year-old and now being told I would not be able to spend the night with my newborn had pushed me over the edge. But as soon as Amber, my son's nurse, heard this she went to her supervisor and then the nursing director and made sure we had the same access as any other parent would have with their newborn. Within an hour we were told it was all taken care of and we were able to be with him as he was discharged from the NICU and taken to the postpartum wing. Amber not only took amazing care of our son but our entire family! We are forever grateful that she took the time to make sure we did not have to leave his side.
