Amber has strengths of focus and discipline, as well as compassionate care. She was well organized and focused, and is sensitive to the patients' needs. Going the "extra mile" to address patients' concerns was a common behavior demonstrated during her clinical rotations. The patients she cared for routinely praised her for her knowledge and skills. She always greeted the patients with a genuine smile, made eye contact, and demonstrated active listening. She always found a way to connect with the patients and establish a trusting relationship which seemed to be very natural for her to do. While caring for a middle-aged female patient who was diagnosed with breast cancer with metastasis to the spine, she performed a scheduled in and out catheterization on the patient. She adhered to strict aseptic technique, initiated patient teaching and taught the patient how to perform the catheterization since this would be necessary after discharge. She expressed empathy for this patient who had a poor prognosis, lack of resources, and was a single parent of a teenage daughter.
Amber also communicated significant abnormal assessment findings (temp 103, tachycardia and decreasing blood pressure) on a patient with lung cancer. She questioned the nurse about the need for blood cultures and worked with the nurse to ensure those orders were obtained, along with IV fluids and antibiotics. She implemented the orders and stayed with the patient, closely monitoring trends in the vitals signs and continued to communicate updates to the nurse. She was professional and helped with transporting the patient to the ICU.
