She helped clean F afterward, showing F a final act of love, care, and compassion. We are forever grateful for Amber and having her in our lives at such an intimate and scary time.
Our son, F, came into the PICU with essentially no brain activity but was still alive as we waited for the correct time for an MRI to fully assess the damage and prognosis. We knew it wasn’t good, and we really knew he wasn’t coming back to us, but we wanted to have all the information before making a decision of that magnitude. So, we spent 5 long days in the PICU. We couldn’t all be with F 24/7, but we wanted to always have someone there to be with him, to not leave him alone. Amber had seen us be admitted & asked to be our nurse the next night. She made sure F was comfortable, working with my wife and the doctors to find the correct meds to keep F calm & to reduce the seizures we were seeing. F was born four months early and was in the NICU for six months as a baby, so we are very used to being in a hospital, working with nurses, and advocating. The most important gift Amber gave us, though, is trust. My wife saw and felt that Amber was caring for F. That security was able to allow my wife to get sleep in the PICU. She took an extra shift the next night to return to F. The relief we felt for that was indescribable. A break in the storm for us. She was there when F passed nearby. I think she was ready to be our night nurse then, too. She helped clean F afterward, showing F a final act of love, care, and compassion. We are forever grateful for Amber and having her in our lives at such an intimate and scary time. Our nurses have defined our and F’s lives.
