Amelia L Rapoport, RN
Amelia was my nurse for my cardioversion. From the moment I arrived, I felt that I was her focus. I felt she could sense my apprehension and repeatedly reassured me, telling me I was doing well and would be fine. She explained every step, from the saline IV being given, to the nasty spray that would go in my throat, to the lidocaine I would need to gargle.
She remained close by as the anesthesiologist came in, the TEE tech, and the Nurse Anesthetist, always adding an encouraging word to me. She would see me looking at the screen with all the data and tell me everything was going well. When I was being connected to various leads and was exposed, she stopped people from coming in, saying, "The patient is exposed... just a minute."
Her caring concern and compassion for me was a great source of comfort for both my husband and me. She also took good care of him, bringing him in and out as needed when equipment and techs needed to get in.
When the procedure was over and I was waking up, she was right there, telling me how everything went well and including some specifics. She asked me questions about my ability to swallow, gave me precise instructions for what and when to eat after I left, and brought water and ginger ale for me.
Perhaps every nurse might take these actions, but Amelia's manner was extraordinarily kind, and her recognition of my anxiety was quick. She also arranged for the therapy dogs to visit me, which was the best medicine of all—Dr. Skippy, the Silky Terrier, and Remy, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
I was so grateful to have her as my nurse, and both my husband and I gave her a hug as she escorted us to the car.
