As a fairly "new to Franciscan Nursing Team" I was in day 2 of orientation and our patient began experiencing quick onset of labored breathing. Through the primary RN assessment, RRT was activated. This onset ended up being a rare obstetric event called an Amniotic Fluid Embolism which is a very rare condition occurring 1 in 100,000 mothers and the survival rate is very very low. Recognition and time are critical to the mother and often the baby's survival. In my 22 years of OB nursing, I've had 2 AFE patients where both of the mothers did not survive. The way the teams of OB, Obstetricians, OR, Anesthesia, and Lab came together to save this mom and baby is so impressive. As the Obstetrician rounding on the unit this day. Dr. Rizzo so graciously responded to our room to guide us. Therese Billings as the Primary RN, Echo Denny, and Penny Boggs as responding RNs, Amber Wallace NNP for stabilization of the newborn. Michelle, Surgical Manager, and all of the Anesthesia Team. Dr. Khan, Dr. Ahmed. Emily McKee for being the support nurse to Lab, Cath Lab and Physician Team through continued stabilization of the patient. The patient was transferred to ICU and returned to our OB unit 2 days with such a grateful heart to all involved.
Thank you for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
