We had a patient on medical that was declining throughout the night. This patient has had many visits on our floor and we were all very familiar with him. Amy Barats, NP came to round on the patient first thing in the morning. She spoke with the family and explained the patient's prognosis was poor but that she would try to change his antibiotics.
Amy kept in touch with the nursing staff and supervisor, explaining this patient did not have long and his son was trying to fly in from China. Amy did everything in her power to ensure the patient could hang on until the son arrived and rounded on this patient and family several times a day.
The son arrived from China not long before his father's passing. The family kindly grabbed her, and Amy confirmed the patient had passed. She reassured the family along the way, through the entire process. She was honest and caring, she was generous with her time and was truly empathic for them. This is just one of the many times Amy shows our nursing staff kindness, empathy, and hard work. I feel honored to work with Amy. She encourages my staff and myself to further our careers, accept challenges and never give up. Thank you Amy, for being our role model.
