She simply listened to the patient's concerns despite the 5-minute time allotment preferred for rooming patients. She prioritized the patient's needs; the patient and her family left the office smiling.
I first met Amy on a dreary, blustery, cool Autumn day when I began orienting to the POB Vascular office site. Immediately I was struck by her kindness and sincerity as I had not worked in a vascular office setting before. Since then, we have become mutual colleagues as well as friends. Amy requires little supervision. She is always enthusiastic about the tasks at hand each day. She is totally trustworthy, dependable, and highly reliable for the entire team at POB. To say it rather bluntly, she is the 'go to person' for all information considered vital for the entire team. What we don't know, Amy knows.
She has both the detailed ability and the cognitive ability to process large, vast amounts of information on a consistent and daily basis. This includes processing the use of EPIC. Although I was introduced to an earlier version of Epic at Columbia- Presbyterian Medical Center in NYC, I was astonished to find how forward the Program had become over time. Amy gave me the time, the space, and the patience for me to be successful at using this newer Epic version. She is the super user of Epic at POB and has not attended Epic classes at the company’s site.
She is the centerpiece of the POB Vascular site. She keeps us all together by always remembering birthdays, puppy events, anniversaries, Wednesday Pizza lunches, "save the cat days," dates of importance to each of us individually and as a group.
With direct patient care, Amy has a fine touch forging bonds with many patients who require long term vascular monitoring. The other day we had a patient extremely distraught considering that her life was changing from a life full of mobility to one of limited mobility. Amy quietly and calmly roomed her and her family in the largest examination room to allow space for “fits of crying." She simply listened to the patient's concerns despite the 5-minute time allotment preferred for rooming patients. (The physician breathed a sigh of relief, by the way!) She prioritized the patient's needs; the patient and her family left the office smiling. Now, what magic potion did Amy use with them? The Potion is labelled as Active listening + a good solid ounce of Compassion. Mix in Empathy, too.
In conclusion, Amy Barnard is exceptional in every way as a nurse, mother of a “student and a professional 15-year-old who loves to mow lawns,” spouse, colleague, and friend.
