Amy stayed at the bedside until 40 minutes of life allowing that important time for baby to get the much-needed skin-to-skin time with mom.
Every time I have gotten the chance to watch Amy work, I have always been in awe. With each patient she comes into contact with, she really takes her time to explain everything that is happening to the parents and makes them feel included in their newborn's care.

The patient I had had an extensive history of loss and towards the end of her labor, the baby was having some deep variables. I decided to call the NICU team to the bedside for delivery just in case that baby came out stunned. We ended up vacuuming the baby out at the end and when she was born, she took a while to come around needing suction and CPAP. The dad was watching her work and Amy was explaining everything that was happening as she was doing it. The baby was on the verge of needing to go to the ICN to transition but Amy made the decision to stay at the bedside and let the mom hold baby skin-to-skin to see if that would be enough for the baby to transition.

The rest of the NICU team went back to their unit while Amy stayed at the bedside until 40 minutes of life allowing that important time for baby to get the much-needed skin-to-skin time with mom. That is exactly what the sweet girl needed, and she got to stay with the parents and continue skin-to-skin and even breastfeed for over 30 minutes!

Every time we need to call the ICN to deliver and I see Amy walk through the door I always feel a wave of relief. She is always so calm, and I never have any doubt in her ability to care for newborns in need. She not only takes on the responsibility of resuscitating the newborns but really takes the extra time after the baby is stable to explain everything that has happened to the new parents. It is always a scary time when the baby is born and needs help getting used to the world outside of the womb. That is why I am always so thankful for the knowledge and confidence that Amy has and brings to work every time. Her presence during scary situations calms the whole room including us as nurses. Thank you so much for all you do, Amy!
