I would like to recognize Krysten Gitter and Amy Brower because of the incredible compassion and dedication they showed during last week’s winter storm. Their actions made a real difference for a patient who truly needed someone in her corner.

As Krysten prepared this patient for discharge to the warming center, it became clear she was worried about how she would get her medications. She didn’t have the means to pick them up, and the weather made everything even more difficult. Krysten immediately stepped in, not because she had to, but because she genuinely cared. She purchased the new discharge prescription with her own money from the outpatient pharmacy, wanting to make sure the patient wouldn’t go without what she needed.

While talking with the patient, Krysten also realized that there were additional medications from a previous PCP visit waiting at Walmart. She didn’t ignore it or assume it wasn’t her responsibility. Instead, she reached out to her manager, Amy, to figure out how to get them.

Amy didn’t hesitate. She contacted Walmart, confirmed the medications were ready, and then, despite the storm, drove there herself to pick them up. She made sure the patient had everything she needed before heading to the warming center, where resources would be limited and having her medications would bring comfort and peace of mind.

What stands out most is that none of this was required. Kristin and Amy simply saw a patient in a vulnerable situation and did what compassionate nurses do: they showed up. They used their own time, their own money, and their own hearts to make sure this patient felt safe, supported, and not alone.

Their actions turned a stressful discharge into one filled with dignity and reassurance. The kindness they showed that day is the kind of nursing you never forget.

Kristin and Amy are both so deserving of this recognition.
