Our son was transferred to the NICU at Women & Infants after being born four weeks early and failing his car seat challenge twice. While at the birthing hospital, we struggled to get him to eat enough during bottle feedings. As first-time parents, we were already overwhelmed, and the transfer to the NICU added another layer of stress and fear.
Our son spent five nights in the NICU, and a blizzard began on a Sunday night. Amy was his day nurse for most of his stay and, because of the storm, worked extra-long shifts caring for him.
During his first feeding while Amy was on shift, she sat down with us and walked us step-by-step through bottle feeding techniques. It was a complete game changer - feeding him after that was like night and day.
While the blizzard was going on, I stayed in the NICU with our son while his dad went home to manage the snow. Between the postpartum hormones, being a first-time mom in the NICU, and not being able to leave or have my husband with me because of the driving ban, I was extremely emotional. Amy was endlessly patient and compassionate with me throughout it all.
One night, I came back from brushing my teeth and found that Amy had made up my bed for me. It was such a small gesture, but it meant so much in that moment. The next night, after thinking to myself that I just wanted to eat my feelings in candy, I returned to the room to find Hershey’s Kisses lined up next to my belongings. Those thoughtful gestures made me feel seen and cared for during one of the hardest weeks of our lives.
Beyond going above and beyond for our family emotionally, Amy also took incredible care of our son and was always there to answer our questions with kindness and reassurance. We will always remember the compassion she showed our family during such a vulnerable time.
