This conversation between the daughter and Amy proved very meaningful for the patient's family. The following night, the patient's two daughters came to our unit to express their gratitude for Amy's time and selflessness.
I personally have never had Amy as my nurse, but have had the pleasure of being her coworker for my time at Abington. Amy is a day-shift team coordinator and charge nurse who can always be counted on to go above and beyond for her patients. A recent experience helped solidify this notion in my mind. Friday evening, Amy was giving me charge report for the floor. While giving me detailed information on each patient, she received a call on the charge phone. The phone call was from a patient's daughter looking for help with a unique situation for her mother. While her mother was previously admitted to our floor as a cancer patient, this current admission she was on a different floor because she was COVID+. The daughter explained that they were attempting to have an end-of-life conversation for their mother in the morning, but were running into issues with having more than one visitor. Given the unique situation, Amy helped facilitate notifying the overnight nursing supervisor of the situation and ensuring that the day shift supervisor would be aware of the situation. Amy didn't stop there. She returned the phone call to the patient's daughter and was able to counsel her on the next steps and give her advice for caring for her mother as she transitions to a new phase of care. All of these conversations were happening well past the end of Amy's shift, on a Friday evening as well. This conversation between the daughter and Amy proved very meaningful for the patient's family. The following night, the patient's two daughters came to our unit to express their gratitude for Amy's time and selflessness. Both daughters were able to participate in the goals of care discussion for their mother, and they were able to formulate a plan to be able to take her home. For me, Amy demonstrated what it means to advocate for our patients, even if they may not be on our unit at the time. Not everyone would take time at the end of their shift, let alone the end of their week, to be as helpful as Amy was in this situation. 2WW and our patients are lucky to have her.
