I underwent surgery to remove a kidney. My surgeon expected my stay to be 2-3 days. I developed a complication that was very painful and caused me to stay an additional 3 days. The pain made it very difficult for me to move around and care for myself. I was determined, however, to do all of the things I needed to do in order to help resolve the problem and prevent further complications, which included a lot of walking. All of the staff on 11 West were extremely kind, patient, and accommodating to me. My family and I are grateful for that. There was one instance though that I will never forget. Amy was my nurse on one of the days (the whole experience is a blur honestly) I was there. I remember laying on my bed while Amy was preparing a "treatment" that would hopefully help to resolve the "complication". Before administering the "treatment" she noticed that the bottoms of my feet were dirty and she washed them. You might be thinking by now, "She washed your feet? That didn't save your life or shorten your stay! How is that worthy of recognition?" I have been thinking about how to write this nomination and so I went to The DAISY Foundation website and found this. "The DAISY Award was created to recognize nurses for the skilled, compassionate care they deliver every day. It is always expected that a nurse has the skill and knowledge to care for his/her patients. The way the care is delivered can make all the difference in the world for the patient and their family." It is true, the simple, humble act that Amy performed did not save my life or shorten my stay, but it spoke volumes about her as a person and a nurse, and the way that she cared about me, dirty feet and all! I'm sure she would say, "It's no big deal, I care for people when they cannot care for themselves even if that includes washing their feet." And that is exactly why I want to say thank you to Amy.
