I will never in my life forget Amy and the care she provided to our family.
Two weeks ago, my husband and I had the greatest scare of our lives. Our 16-month-old son woke up with a fever and a bruise-like rash and we found ourselves in the Arnold Palmer Emergency Department. In what seemed like the blink of an eye, our son was then admitted to the Pediatric Hematology & Oncology floor at APH being worked up for what the doctors thought was Leukemia.
As a nurse myself, I was fully aware of the gravity of what our medical team was saying, but as a mom, I was the most terrified I have ever been in my life. Amy Coisnard was the first nurse that admitted us to the Hematology/Oncology floor and I could tell instantly that we were in great hands. We had her as our nurse for two out of our three-day stay. She was precepting a newer nurse, and simply by observing her thoughtful interaction with her orientee, I knew she was special. She even stayed late by 3-4 hours one night because they had an influx of admissions and she wanted to “help her team get settled for the night”. That is the type of nurse you want on your team.
Amy showed us an incredible amount of care, compassion, and light in such and dark scary time. She was excellent with our son, never failed to acknowledge him when she came in the room, and always thought of things that would help to make his/our stay better. She was exceptional at notifying us of conversations she was having with providers, as well as lab results that she knew we were anxiously awaiting. There is no doubt that she saw the fear in our eyes and could see our tears as we awaited the test results yet she was so patient with us while we experienced these emotions.
For reasons far greater than any of our understanding, our son was cleared of having Leukemia and was discharged home just in time for Christmas. To be a pediatric nurse is to be an actual angel walking this planet Earth, and to work with children that are battling things like cancer, hematologic disorders, etc. is a true calling. I will never in my life forget Amy and the care she provided to our family. She has made me want to be a better and more compassionate nurse to our patients. She is an excellent nurse on the APH Pediatric Hematology & Oncology unit and impacts children and their family’s lives daily.
