After making certain it was ok to enter, Amy brought a stool in and sat with my uncle; listening, speaking when needed, and allowing him to express his feelings without drama or judgment.
Amy Flakes provided compassionate care to a family of a dying patient. The granddaughter of the patient, Mr. T, sent a letter to Administration discussing her family’s experience and the support they received from the healthcare team, mentioning Amy by name. Mr. T was just diagnosed with biliary duct cancer. The family was going through an excruciating emotional decision on how to provide care for Mr. T. The granddaughter was so impressed by the care of her grandfather, that she wrote this in her letter:

“I’d like a shout-out to Amy. Upon receiving the news that my grandfather was entering complete renal failure, my uncle who suffers from mental illness, went into the restroom banging his fists and screaming to the point security was called. After making certain it was ok to enter, Amy brought a stool in and sat with my uncle; listening, speaking when needed, and allowing him to express his feelings without drama or judgment. She went far above her responsibilities.

My sweet grandfather was discharged to Crossroads Hospice. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family. As a nurse, I could not have asked for better care or a better team for my family. Unfortunately, we are working my grandmother up for lung cancer. She has chosen St. Luke’s Hospital for her healthcare, and as her POA, I have the utmost faith in this hospital system and am assured she will receive the best care possible.”

What wonderful words from a granddaughter who just lost a loved family member. Not only did 7700 take excellent care of the patient in his last days, but Amy also recognized the grief of another family member and took the time to console him. She has shown extraordinary compassion. Thank you, Amy, for your leadership and kindness.
