Amy Patalano is an exceptional, dedicated nurse who consistently provides compassionate care to her patients throughout their birthing experience. Her commitment to patient-centered care was exemplified when her patient developed life-threatening hemorrhagic shock immediately after the delivery of her first child. This rare, unexpected complication required massive blood transfusion, procedures in the operating room and interventional radiology suite for stabilization, and postoperative critical care in the ICU. Amy remained steadfast in caring for her patient for six stressful hours, and her presence provided a continuity of clinical care that was essential to her patient's well-being. Amy ensured that the patient and her family, who did not speak English as their first language, were provided updates with an interpreter service. Based on her years of labor and delivery experience, she shared essential knowledge with the other procedural and critical care nurses who became part of her patient's care team. Even in the interventional radiology suite, which is a very foreign environment, Amy actively sought out ways to remain helpful within her skill set and scope of practice, such as verifying blood for administration and even serving as a runner to obtain more blood products from the blood bank when no other person was available. Amy maintained a calm demeanor throughout an acutely harrowing experience and provided invaluable support to the entire multidisciplinary clinical team. Amy's unwavering resilience and dedication to caring for her patient served as a key factor that resulted in her patient's excellent clinical outcome.
