This weekend, I had a patient on the complex care inpatient service who was extremely fragile, and extremely ill. She has underlying genetic and metabolic disease, dysphagia, epilepsy, and profound developmental delays. She came in with both sepsis and a GI bleed, and needed high-intensity, highly skilled nursing care.
Fortunately, Amy McCormick was assigned to be her nurse that day. Amy juggled meds, fluid boluses, extremely difficult blood draws, and the RRT/PICU team without complaint. She advocated for the child with her charge nurse and with the PICU and VATS teams, kept the father informed with a translator, and made frequent concrete (and much appreciated) recommendations that showed an advanced understanding of pathophysiology. It was a long, and I am sure frustrating day, but she maintained perfect professionalism. We managed to stabilize the patient and keep her from needing urgent transfer to the PICU. I could not have managed this patient without her expert skill set, and just wanted to let you know what a fabulous asset she is to your group!
