This was my first experience having an outpatient surgical procedure performed at Bayview Hospital. I felt nervous and anxious. As I headed to the pre-op area, I was greeted by a very cheerful Amy O’Toole. Amy was wonderful; she was kind, patient, genuinely concerned, explained all the interventions to be performed, and was just a soothing presence as my nurse. What stood out most about my time with Amy was the quality of service and compassion she displayed towards me. I did not indicate on my paperwork that I had a disability. In some ways, I do not consider dwarfism a disability. After returning from the bathroom, where I provided a urine sample for an HCG test, I found a step stool beside my bed and a smaller adult-size BP cuff. It warmed my heart that she thought of this for me. The icing on the cake was when I went to put on the hospital gown, which would normally swallow me and drag on the floor; it was a 'perfect fit. ' I was surprised. I asked Amy, " Where did you get this gown? Was it prepared for me in advance? " Her reply was," Once I saw you and when you went to the bathroom, I made alterations to the gown so it would fit you well. " I thought that was the most thoughtful, compassionate action- just so considerate. It was nice to feel seen and valued.
