A nurse is not an easy profession to define. Nurses have many roles these days, work in many different departments and serve a variety of important functions. There remains, however, some core features of what defines a nurse. Caring, compassion, and empathy are chief among them. Amy possesses all of these. She always arrives to work with a smile. She spends a lot of time at the bedside and even in the busy ED, gets to know her patients and their families. She delivers amazing care and does so with compassion and empathy. The other important role of a nurse is that of a teacher. Amy is our best preceptor. She takes her new nurses and helps them problem solve, to think, to learn and to be curious. She is patient and nurturing, supportive and caring. She would also be far too humble to admit these things. Despite adversity, Amy comes to work to be a nurse, and she does so at the highest level.
