Minor Surgery received a patient via ambulance from a physician's office. He sent the patient for outpatient blood transfusions. It was discovered late in the day. There were no arrangements made for the patient to be transported back to the nursing facility. The minor nurses investigated and were able to make ambulance transport arrangements, however, the earliest it could be was 7 pm -8 pm. The Minor unit closes at 5:30. ACU has a bed opening up, but there were other patients in line for it. It would also then bump the waiting patients and results in the ACU nurse completely a full assignment and also another move for an elderly nursing home patient.
Amy Reifler volunteered to stay with the patient in Minor Surgery until the ambulance would arrive to take her home. Amy felt that this would be the best thing to do for the patient as well as her peers, and the patients who were awaiting bed placement. Amy voluntarily gave up her evening plans and stayed with the patient to provide her comfort and ensure her safety until the ambulance arrived to transport her to her facility. I feel Amy should be recognized for her compassion exhibited to the patient as well as her peers. This action clearly demonstrated the AHS Pride Values.
