The patient is a very nice but unfortunate 79-year-old woman who has coronary artery disease with prior bypass surgery, chronic renal failure, Bell's palsy with facial paralysis, prior midbrain stroke, and now recurring respiratory distress. She was admitted to the ACC at MBMC with yet another episode of dyspnea and her chest x-ray showing infiltrates. She felt terrible with quite significant dyspnea and weakness.
In addition, her blood counts were quite low, and a subsequent bone marrow biopsy showed acute myelogenous leukemia. Amy was one of her nurses on several of her prior admissions. In this admission in particular, with her being so ill, they found Amy's care to be remarkably comforting. Amy always addressed the patient and her family members by name, remembering them from prior hospitalizations. They even took pictures with her. In addition, her competent nature reassured them that they were receiving nothing but the highest quality care.
During her office visit this week, the patient's son wanted me to know how great Amy was and requested her full name and hospital mailing address to send her a card. While all of our nurses are outstanding, Amy certainly displays outstanding care for her patients.
