Amy demonstrates wisdom, patience, patient-centered focus, and a legacy of emerging leaders in her wake.
Amy Skrinjar, DD, MSN, RN has been an extraordinary leader since she walked through the door of Cone Health 16 years ago. Mentoring others on a daily basis has led to many staff entering the RN 3, RN 4, SCC, Assistant Director, Director, and even CNO roles within Cone Health. Leaders from other specialties (such as providers, mid-levels, and operative services) can be found in Amy's office seeking guidance or direction. Amy has successfully led one large unit of 100+ employees through a hospital transition and a Pandemic. Amy can always be reached by email or text if needed for the unit and has always kept an open-door policy for 16 years for any staff member, physician, or employee. When a classroom was not ready for an education event for 45 staff members, Amy responded immediately on a Sunday evening providing options and reassurance. Amy always makes sure we have the best tools to take care of our patients and rounds frequently to ensure equipment is in good working condition. Amy knows staff input increases morale and she will use Surveys or the Shared Governance Model before making changes that impact staff. Amy will "peek" in on the weekends or nights and see that staff is having a high census shift and will call in a treat such as cookies or pizza. Amy never denies a nurse a chance to pursue an educational opportunity if it is within her power to approve it or within the approved education budget. Amy assisted with planning for a Spring Spinning Babies Class to help decrease the Cesarean Section rate and educate staff. Amy also went shopping for food, open the class, and clean up the venue location. Amy knows her staff well and checks in to see how each one is doing as they acclimate to such a large unit. I have never heard a new employee say they were afraid of the manager or nervous about speaking to Amy, she is always approachable by any departmental staff member or service line employee. When you say "Amy" anywhere within the W&CC Tower, almost everyone knows it is Amy Skrinjar, DD. Amy is the kind of leader that staff does not want to retire or leave her position of impact. Amy demonstrates wisdom, patience, patient-centered focus, and a legacy of emerging leaders in her wake. There is no one who deserves the DAISY Nurse Leader Award more than Amy Skrinjar for all that she has contributed to patients, families, and staff within the Cone Health System.
