October 2020 Honoree
amy smukalla, RN
In my lifetime, I have been in and out of hospitals for a variety of reasons. I am pleased to have their opportunity to share about a nurse who stands out as exemplary. Amy greets me with a smile and a positive attitude every time she stops in. She is prompt and efficient in her work which is such a blessing as a patient. Things that would seem minor, can be a big deal at times as a patient like beeping monitors, a glass of water, an offer to help with something extra - and she was so on top of things, I feel in good hands. Never once was I made to feel like a bother. I am careful to only request what is needed and try to be intentional about other people's time but often have experienced exacerbated, exhausted, hurried healthcare staff - not today! This was my first stay at this hospital and she has represented you all so well with expertise, professionalism, kindness, promptness, and genuine good care. She is a keeper and based on the days I have spent here, a leader among her peers. Her shift was ending but I needed a new IV. I am a hard stick proven by my time here so she called a co-worker who she deemed an expert in the skill and asked her to come to see me.
Thank you, Amy, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
