Amy had received a Rapid Response Code Stroke call and arrived to find the patient unable to move their right side, having total right sided neglect, and non-verbal. Code stroke protocol was followed and Amy accompanied the patient to CT scan while maintaining C-spine precautions.
The hospitalist involved was initially thinking this was a reaction to the contrast the patient received while in the ER; however Amy was firm in stating that is not how he is currently presenting and insisted on calling neurology. The neurologist spoke with Amy, then the hospitalist, and it was decided to give TPA and transfer the patient to Saint Luke's Hospital for further intervention. It turns out this patient had a large clot they retrieved through Mercy retrieval. The patient had a severe Left MCA stroke.
This patient is currently attending rehab and continues to show improvements. Amy was not only a great advocate for this patient but took the time to help educate the other RNs as to what was happening with the patient and reassure them of what a great job they all did calling the Rapid Response Code Stroke and assisting with giving all the required patient information.
Amy was able to keep a positive attitude and a smile throughout the night. Amy truly displays excellent teamwork while ensuring that the best care is provided for all patients.
Thank you Amy for all that you do for both our patients and the staff at Saint Luke's East Hospital. The impact you have reaches further than you can ever imagine. We are so lucky to have you as a member of the team!
